Back in the early days of home computing in 1976, I had my first computer: An IMSAI 8080. Each and every board in it had a voltage regulator. When you filled the thing up with memory boards, it generated a LOT of heat. In the winter time, I could get by with a quiet whisper fan. But when summer came around, I had to swap it out for a noisy, but high volume fan. Those were also the days when turning on my computer would knock out the neighbor's television sets!
