In the beginning bowling was a much more popular as a spectator sport! Real enthusists really lost their head over the game, and you only got one roll per game. The invention of the bowling ball seemed to make the game much more popular as a participant sport.
Try the videogame Flatout on the ps2 or the xbox. You get to bowl with people, with screaming and all.
